November 2017: Detroit Startup Events & Recent News

Staying on top of Detroit startup events is kind of our thing.

Why?

Because the energy in Detroit’s entrepreneurial ecosystem is contagious. It’s vibrant. Passionate. Innovative. Brave. Whether you’re working at a fast-growing tech company or attending a startup happy hour, you get a feeling that you’re part of something big. “Big” like the renaissance of a great American city big.

We want you to experience this incredible feeling, too.

A few other awesome Detroit startup events happening this month:

November 8th: Small Business Hacks Speaker Series - Bootstrapping your Marketing Strategy
Why is Michigan such a great place for entrepreneurs? Startup events happen throughout the entire state. Grand Rapids area entrepreneurs are invited to join the third meetup of Small Business Hacks, hosted by Grand Circus Grand Rapids. The event series provides small business owners with simple, cost-effective ways to be more profitable. For this meetup, Michigan-based multicultural marketing agency Vías Latino Market Consultants will discuss strategies and insights for building deep connections with Latinos and other multicultural communities.

November 16th: 8th Annual Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition
A great opportunity to network, this pitch competition brings hundreds of investors and venture capitalists from across the country. The competition awards up to $1 million in cash and in-kind prizes. More than 200 companies applied, but only 36 semi-finalists will present their business plan to a panel of judges and hundreds of attendees at the Masonic Temple. Finalists will pitch later in the day, and a winner (as well as runners-up) will be announced at the end of the night.

November 18th: City-Wide SOUP
Three words: community, food, and micro-granting. This public potluck dinner (supplied, in part, by Foodlab Detroit) brings together hundreds of residents to talk about projects they’re working on in the city. From art and urban agriculture to social justice and entrepreneurship, there’s no limit to the types of creative ideas you can bring to the event but keep in mind that you only get 60 seconds to share your vision. A five dollar donation is encouraged. At the end of the night, everyone votes on which project to fund with the money raised from those donations. Attendees can bring a specific dish or their favorite meal. And yes, soup will be served.

Here’s what the startup community was talking about in October.

This Detroit clothing startup went on ‘Shark Tank’ and landed a $150K investment
Ash & Erie (formerly Ash & Anvil) appeared on “Shark Tank” last month to pitch the show’s investors on its business: clothes for shorter guys. They were initially aiming for a $100,000 investment, but ended up receiving $150,000 from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban for a 25 percent stake in the company. First-time founders Steven Mazur and Eric Huang say they’re happy to have an experienced partner on board.

11 startups pitched to investors at the 2017 Techstars Mobility Demo Day
Last month, Detroit hosted the largest single-day event focused on mobility startups in the world. The Techstars Mobility Accelerator class of 2017 featured 11 startups from across the globe, including Israel, Dubai, Germany and the United States. Those companies pitched to more than 1,200 people from 113 different automotive OEMs, suppliers, transportation companies and venture capital funds. How cool is that? And there’s more to come. Techstars Mobility will unveil its 2018 program at next year’s North American International Auto Show.
